Original Dutch text:
FALLEN SANCTUARY
Theories Of Ruin
Eigen Beheer
Here we go again!

FALLEN SANCTUARY
Theories Of Ruin
Private Management
Here we go again! Fallen Sanctuary is an American two-man band consisting of brothers Dezarn. William took the vocals, guitar and bass on his behalf, especially James the guitar and drums. Where this has resulted is a CD with in-house to cover the first strikes, more because of the color combination than the real beauty of it. If I then go to the music then decide it's not long before I really am sold. This is my style: pure U.S. power / thrash with so many light-fingered riffs, varied tempos, sharp solos and a singer who more than once all the air from his lungs screaming. The song "Whores of Mammon" I get tired of not listening, a strong song and the dark atmosphere in this picture slowly grabs me by the throat. These guys must urgently find a drummer and bassist as a real band so they go through life. Then they have their slice of the farmer in the hope that an honest record them all at least as an honest proposal. Fans of the old Iced Earth, Helstar, Liege Lord, and all other U.S. power metal gods have here a big nut to crack. With songs from all the "house" disks that we have been gathered, we now have a very nice compilation can make that many simply ignorant metal fan to blow down. www.fallensanctuary.net

FALLEN SANCTUARY
Theories Of Ruin
(Self-financed)
Sometimes when I look at today's heavy metal
scene, I can't help myself but wonder why everything has gone so minimal
these days (musically speaking). Well, heavy metal was never the genre
to attract musicians from conservatoires or universities. It always used
the simplicity factor as a means for a deeper emotional expression. But
being simple never meant being simplistic as well. Imagine a band that
would sit their asses down and compose actual riffs, music fragments of
substance rather than drum paces played by guitars. Imagine a bunch of
guys having a clear vision of the music they want to play instead of being
pushed around every time a fashionable pattern comes along. Imagine people
that actually love the sport of heavy metal for what it is! Fallen Sanctuary
is the band to fulfill all of the above statements. William and James Dezarn
are two brothers from Indiana and Fallen Sanctuary is for the time being
their own family business. They formed this band back in 2001 after a long
but pointless struggle in music, in order to play the kind of metal they
wish. Reading their bio I was astonished but also moved by the fact that
these two lads started out as bassist and drummer to evolve into a guitar
duo to fight back the lack of musicians standing in their way! Now excuse
me, but I have to pay my respects to these guys for their persistence!
Within six years they managed to turn themselves upside down and become
one of the deadliest guitar twins I've listened to in quite a while! But
that is something I will deal with later on. Anyway we already have a guitar
duo, a bassist and a drummer in the package of two, so what's missing?
Well since this is not an instrumental band the singing section is a task
fallen on William's shoulders. But let me comment on his performance later
on as well. If I was to describe Fallen Sanctuary in a few words I'd say
that 'Theories of Ruin' is the most modern US power metal can get. Their
material shares influences from bands of the second wave of US power metal
(as I call it) like Iced Earth (up until 'Night of the Stormrider') and
Sanctuary (Nevermore of 'In Memory' included) and other American metal
legends such as Metal Church and Vicious Rumors. They're power metal not
only in name but also in essence. You won't be able to find a weak spot
in their material. Even when you listen to acoustic parts you can sense
the power behind! Their riffs are goddamn nostalgic since there's not many
bands focusing on that matter anymore and pulling it off. There's no smudging
here, no death metal topped by clean vocals, just pure heavy metal as it
should be. William and James bombed me with their amazing ideas and solid
playing time and time again. Even the solos are special since many of them
are of that particular kind where a really catchy riff is continuously
played in a solo frequency. In fact some of these ideas seem to be like
left out from Iced Earth's 'Night of the Stormrider'! There's no questioning
of the Dezarns' skill with the guitar but an interesting thing about their
soloing is that it's deeply influenced by early Iced Earth. And that's
a huge advantage if you ask me! Drums are simply great but bass is lost
under the heavy toned guitars. William's vocals are splendid. His hue maybe
hoarse resembling a bit Tim Aymar's voice but this is absolutely no problem
when it comes to high-pitch singing! There are also heavy loads of emotion
put into his vocals and that's just something you don't easily come across
nowadays. As if their above described attributes weren't enough, the Dezarn
brothers are also the producers of their music! The production may be crunchy
(that's the element which makes them sound modern) but who freaking cares
since one, that's what they wanted and two, the music's quality leaves
no room for criticism on that issue. Songs like 'Whores of Mammon', 'The
Hive', 'Masquerade of Sanity' and 'Sins of Old' are self-explanatory. No
need for me to rattle anymore. If you think you like heavy metal then it's
a crime to deny these guys your support since this is a self financed album.
And a message to all Indiana musicians: what the fuck are you thinking?
Go make this band a complete killing machine! My hails and best wishes
are with the Derzan bros. You rule!

Fallen Sanctuary is the brainchild of two brothers from the southwest side of
Indianapolis who, having grown weary of toiling in dead-end bands, decided to
pursue their own vision of heavy fuckin' metal. James and William Dezarn withdrew
from the local music scene to their one-room woodshack in Montana (not really)
for a few years (really) to focus on creating the sound that they always
wanted to hear. Attempts to recruit outside help in the guitar department ultimately
proved futile; thus, drummer James and bassist/vocalist William took on the dueling
guitarist roles on top of their original ones as members of the rhythm section.
The end result is the self-produced "Theories of Ruin".
It is very rare to hear a release that is "all killer with no filler". Every time
I listened to this CD, I played it all the way through EACH TIME. Their musical
style is a fusion of traditional & power metal (Dio, Iced Earth, and Metal Church)
with modern underground metal ala Arch Enemy and Nevermore. Every song is packed with
great riffs and excellent leads performed by both Dezarns. William's voice is very
reminiscent of Ripper Owens ("Jugulator"-era Judas Priest), with strong mid-range
and occasional high-pitched vocals utilized in a tasteful manner. Unlike most
power metal singers, William does NOT commit overkill in this department. Fallen
Sanctuary also distinguish themselves from most power metal bands (and especially Dio)
by avoiding the usual lyrics of hobbits and Castle Grayskull. Instead, they focus
on subject matter relating to THIS world from the political to the personal. The
arrangements of the songs on this CD are crafted expertly using old-school
metal song structures and modern metal production; thus, sounding very professional
in the process.
Some new-school and more extreme metal fans might consider this release to be outdated.
If you fall into this group, look elsewhere for your musical fix. True metal fans,
however, will want to add this CD to their collections. Buy this now! IT'S THAT DAMNED GOOD!
